1. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2020

$23.99

Get a 50-60% discount on Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2020
TechRadar's #1 rated antivirus in a world packed with loads of virus protection providers, and doesn't even cost that much more than free antivirus downloads.

Note: For our Bitdefender Antivirus Plus review, we tested the 2019 version. This was updated and renamed to 2020 in July this year.

Take a look at any rankings of big independent antivirus and Bitdefender's premium security products always rise to the top.

It tends to be reliable and accurate in its virus detecting, featuring web filtering to blocks access to malicious sites, a secure browser that keeps your online banking ans shopping transactions safe, and there's a password manager which auto-completes credit card details in web forms. It also scores high for its excellent anti-phishing module, which alerts you to malicious links in your search engine results and blocks access to dangerous sites.

There's also multi-layer ransomeware protection that heuristically learns the behaviour of such threats to keep you safe as well as the ability to scan all your linked devices via the Bitdefender Central mobile app.

There are one or two issues – it grabs more resources than average, and might conflict with some programs – but Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is still a likeable package which offers excellent detection rates, great performance, and more than enough bonus features to justify the price.

Bitdefender Internet Security builds on AVP and triples the number of devices covered plus offers anti-spam, firewall, parental advisor and file encryption features.

For a little bit more you can purchase the Bitdefender Total Security edition. It adds all of the above and covers up to five PCs, Macs, Android and iOS devices.

2. Norton AntiVirus Plus

Operating system: Windows only | Maximum devices covered: 1 | Stand out features: Advanced privacy security, financial security, global civilian intelligence network

Norton AntiVirus Plus
$39.99
Blocks even brand new malware
Browser extension extras can be unreliable

Norton AntiVirus Plus is a top quality malware hunter which can automatically protect your PC all on its own.

The newly named product was introduced in April 2019 as a direct replacement for the old Norton AntiVirus Basic. Moving from 'Basic' to 'Plus' certainly sounds better, but it really only adds a couple of extra functions - more on which further down this article.

Norton offers plenty of tweaks, options and settings for those who need them, as well as features like a handy URL blocker that keeps you away from malicious websites. If that misses something, an excellent file reputation service heuristically recognises suspect downloads immediately. And if malware still finds a way through, intelligent behaviour monitoring uses its up to date virus definitions to quarantine threats at the first sign of trouble.

If you're a more hands-on type, you can easily run scans on demand. Maybe set up and save custom scans to check just the areas you need. Even schedule them to run at a particular time, but only if your system is idle, and it's not running on battery power.

So what does Plus do that Basic didn't? Only a couple of things really: it adds a bonus 2GB worth of cloud backup and a password manager. The latter is worth having if you've not got one already, but it can't match the power of Dashlane and other market leaders

There can be problems with some of the browser extensions. For example, we've found the Chrome version sometimes stops working for no apparent reason. We've seen plenty of reviewers reporting similar problems, so there does seem to be a real issue here.

Antivirus

That said, Norton AntiVirus Plus's main functions deliver on all fronts: it's easy to use, has the configuration options experts need, comes highly rated by the testing labs, and is carefully designed to have the least possible impact on your system performance.

3. Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus

Operating system: Windows and Mac | Maximum devices covered: 1 | Stand out features: Always-on security, identity protection, real-time anti-phishing, firewall monitor

Best Paid Antivirus For Pc

Webroot AntiVirus 1 Year
$19.99
Extremely light on system resources
No testing data from the top labs

Just about every antivirus tool claims to be ‘lightweight’, but Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus is the only one to really deliver on this front. Installation takes seconds, the program files barely grab 2MB of your hard drive, RAM footprint is tiny, and there are no bulky signature updates to tie up your bandwidth.

There's no compromise on features, though. Along with the core protection, there's smart behaviour monitoring, accurate real-time antiphishing, a firewall and network connection monitor, enhanced anti-ransomware, and other interesting extras.

It's not easy to compare Webroot's accuracy with the competition, as the big testing labs rarely evaluate the company's products. But when they are reviewed, they generally score well, and our own tests show solid and reliable protection.

There's a lot to like about SecureAnywhere AntiVirus, and Webroot's 70-day 100% money-back guarantee suggests it's confident in the product, too. If you're tired of overly complicated and bloated engines, Webroot must be on your shortlist.

4. ESET NOD32 Antivirus

Expert-level antivirus for the more experienced user

Operating system: Windows only | Maximum devices covered: 5 | Stand out features: Ransomware Shield, UEFI Scanner, Exploit Blocker, cloud powered scanning

ESET NOD32 1 Year
$39.99
Highly configurable
Relatively expensive

If you judge antivirus software on the length of its feature list, ESET NOD32 Antivirus might be a disappointment. There’s no firewall, password manager, file shredder, vulnerability scanner or any of the bundled extras you'll often find elsewhere.

This doesn't mean the package is short on power, it's just more focused on the fundamentals. ESET NOD32 Antivirus comes with real-time malware protection, some of the best heuristic detection around, an anti-ransomware layer, exploit protection, URL filtering to block malicious websites, and modules to prevent attacks using PowerShell and malicious scripts.

A Device Control module limits the risk of infection from other devices by controlling access to USB sticks, external hard drives, optical storage media, even devices connecting by Bluetooth and FireWire. It's an unusual extra, but could make a difference if others are regularly plugging devices into your PC.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus isn't aimed at beginners. The interface is clumsy sometimes, some features are very advanced, and even the Help isn't always exactly helpful.

Experienced users will appreciate ESET’s power and configurability, though. Above-average protection does a good job of keeping you safe, and a lightweight design ensures the package won't slow you down.

One of the new features in the latest update is the UEFI Scanner which protects you from threats that attack your PC before Windows has even started.

ESET Internet Security builds on NOD 32 and triples the number of devices covered plus offers firewall, botnet protection, webcam protection, antispam and more.

Alternatively, you can purchase the ESET Smart Security Premium edition for not much more. It adds all of the above as well as password management and secure data.

5. F-Secure Antivirus SAFE

The most easy to use antivirus option

Operating system: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS | Maximum devices covered: 3 | Stand out features: Browsing and banking protection, Family Rules, ransomware protection

F-Secure 1 Year
$34.99
Very user-friendly
Prone to false positives

F-Secure Antivirus SAFE is a great collection of antivirus tools, and while it's a bit more expensive than some of the other programmes on this best of list, the amount of features you get makes the cost worthwhile.

With F-Secure Antivirus SAFE, you get the brilliant antivirus software from F-Secure, along with banking protection for safe online shopping, family safety tools and a device finder that lets you track your lost Android or iOS device, and if needs be remotely lock or delete it as well.

The package typically receives maximum marks for protection from AV-Test, and generally scores highly with AV-Comparatives, too. They also say it can generate significantly more false positives than most of the competition, but how that affects you will vary depending on how you use your computer.

The interface is a major plus. It's extremely easy to use, lightweight, and for the most part you can just leave the app alone to look after your PC. The program has minimal effect on your system performance, and if you do need to intervene then you can generally solve any issues in a couple of clicks.

In 2018, F-Secure Anti-Virus SAFE remains an appealing package: fast, lightweight, and able to run alongside many other security tools without conflict - you can read more about the company's offering with our F-Secure Anti-Virus review of its slightly lighter product.

6. Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Operating system: Windows only | Maximum devices covered: 5 | Stand out features: Automatic scans, drive-by cryptomining infection prevention, simplified security management

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 1 Year
$29.99
One of the best performing security packages
Kaspersky's full suites are better value

Kaspersky Anti-Virus is a stripped-back security package which focuses on the core security essentials: web filtering blocks dangerous URLs, an accurate engine detects and removes threats, smart monitoring technologies track and reverse malicious actions, and that's about it.

Fortunately, what you do get works well. Very, very well. We've consistently found Kaspersky to be amongst the best at blocking malware, and removing it from an infected system, plus it's regularly top-rated at sites like AV-Comparatives.

The program is easy to use, too. A well-designed interface has just the right number of buttons and options – not too basic, but not complicated or intimidating, either – and there are plenty of on-screen instructions to explain how everything works. Even a beginner will be at home right away.

If you just need accurate, reliable and consistent malware protection, Kaspersky Anti-Virus will serve you well.

7. Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security

Operating system: Windows only | Maximum devices covered: 1 | Stand out features: Ransomware protection, advanced AI learning, email scam safeguarding, Pay Guard

Trend Micro AntiVirus+ 1 Year
$29.95
Affordable pricing
Strong protection
Sightly limiting options

Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security is a very capable package that's simple to use with above average antispam and an effective ‘Folder Shield’ module to block ransomware. And it seems to get better and better as time goes on.

How good is it exactly? The top testing labs all rate it highly for protection, although there's some disagreement on the details. In particular, AV-Comparatives says it gives a high number of false positives, which could be a real nuisance. But AV-Test reports high levels of accuracy and no issues with false positives at all.

If there's a problem here, it's likely to be performance impact. PassMark's March 2019 Performance report assessed 14 security products on various performance-related benchmarks, and Trend Micro came towards the bottom part of the list.

Our experiences with the product are a little more favourable: protection levels appear similar to Bitdefender, false positives are only marginally higher, and it doesn't slow down our system noticeably more than anything else.

We'd recommend running the trial for its full 30 days before you buy, then, to see if you notice any problems. But if you're unaffected, its high levels of detection and excellent bonus features make Trend Micro a good choice.

8. Panda Dome Essential

Operating system: Windows only | Maximum devices covered: Unlimited | Stand out features: Process monitor, URL filtering, bootable USB rescue drive

Lots of features
Interface won't be for everybody

Real-time malware detection, speedy cloud-based scanning, URL filtering to block malicious websites: Panda Dome Essential antivirus has all the goodies you'd expect from the best antivirus software.

That's just the start. Panda Dome is jam-packed with added extras that some of the other plans on this list don't match. From port scanning and ping handling to in-depth process monitoring and an integrated VPN.

When it comes to the main event - virus protection - there's not a lot of Panda test results from the independent labs around right now, but the figures we've seen don't exactly fill us with confidence as Panda came towards the bottom of the pile according to AV-Comparatives. This doesn't mean that Panda Dome will put your devices in harm's way, but you can understand why we'd recommend other providers over it on this basis.

The interface will be a little bit decisive, too. With so many weird and wonderful features included, Panda Dome does a very capable job of making sure that they can all be accessed and you can go as in-depth as you need. But on the other side of the same coin, this might put off users who just want a quiet, simple antivirus package.

One undoubted bonus is the price - Panda Dome Essential is one of the best value programs out there. And you even have the option of paying a little more and upgrading to cover an unlimited number of laptops, phones, tablets and desktops with a single subscription.

Best free antivirus downloads

Paying for a premium service means you get more features, such as spam filters, parental controls, system scans and advanced firewalls. This makes them more suitable for power users, those who want a bit of extra security and anyone who wants their system to run as smoothly as possible. It also means you avoid annoying pop-ups that try and tempt you to upgrade to the full version. And, as you've discovered above, they don't really cost too much to buy

But these days you can get top quality protection absolutely free, with just about every single major vendor out there offering a free antivirus. By doing so, developers gain access to more devices from which they can collect data and therefore improve their knowledge and security platforms, so it’s not in their interest to reduce the amount of protection provided by the free version.

Windows has come a long way in terms of security, but it's still fair to suggest that Windows 10's built-in solution, Windows Defender, is the last free AV app you should trust to keep your system clean.

So if you're determined to get free antivirus, we strongly suggest that you check out our list of best security downloads in 2019 below. We've highlighted their features -and shortcomings - to ensure that you pick out the best one.

1. Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition

The best free antivirus scanner in 2018

Operating system: Windows, Mac, Android | Version: 2018 | Features: Phishing protection, Behavioural analysis, Automatic scanning

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition
Fast scanning
Advanced users may want more control

Essentially consisting of the AV section of the full product, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition's clean, light, well constructed scanning mechanisms – which are almost universally faster than the industry average – and unrivalled virus definitions mean Bitdefender is back at the top of the free tree.

The free version's insistence on running in autopilot mode is a double-edged sword, making the process of virus management easy but taking it out of the user's hands; while we're inclined to trust it, there have been cases in the past of automatic systems going slightly rogue, such as the incident a few years back when Panda Antivirus identified itself as a virus and locked up a large number of Windows systems.

AV-TEST's testing did pick out a few flaws in its handling of zero-day threats, however. And it's worth pointing out that for you can currently get our top rated paid-for solution - Bitdefender Antivirus Plus - for the equivalent of around $2 per month. That's a tiny amount to pay for a tonne of extra features, such as online banking protection, integrated password manager, permanent file shredder and and free online 24/7 support.

2. Avast Free Antivirus

A much-improved free antivirus suite

Operating system: Windows, Mac, Android | Version: 17 | Features: Virus detection, Gaming mode, Password manager, Malware scanner

Avast Free Antivirus
Doesn’t slow your computer
Irritating privacy settings

Avast and AVG haven't yet fully merged, despite the former formally acquiring the latter in mid-2016. The newly combined company says the two free antivirus products will remain separate, although there's apparently a joint AV package on the way soon. Obviously, though, Avast now has a lot more data to work with, having expanded its effective userbase (and, therefore, its threat detection network) to a whopping 400 million users.

The latest edition of Avast Free Antivirus adds an automatic gaming mode to mute popups and reduce system load when you're firing up a processor-hungry game, which is very handy indeed, and the interface has been given a clean new overhaul. There's a password manager, too, which is an undeniably good addition to your security portfolio.

It scores well on AV-TEST's widespread malware benchmark and continues a clean sweep against 0-day attacks – presumably that expanded detection network is really helping. Less impressive is the slight negative effect Avast has on software launch times, and its slightly popup-heavy attitude.

3. Sophos Home

The perfect choice for a home full of PCs

Operating system: Windows, Mac | Version: 17 | Features: Virus detection, Phishing protection, Parental controls, Protects up to 10 PCs

Sophos Home Free
Simple and non-intrusive
No scan scheduling

Marketing itself as 'business-grade security', Sophos Home does a little more than most free antivirus software, and actually seems better suited to families.

You get standard virus protection and anti-malware protection, along with browser tools like anti-phishing and, most importantly, content control. Combined with central management of up to 10 PCs, this means you can effectively lock down your kids' browsing options.

Although AV-TEST hasn't formally assessed Sophos' skills, fellow lab AV-Comparatives offers a decent rating of its abilities.

Although Sophos Home has always had desktop notifications, there was no premium version of the software for it to encourage an upgrade to. That changed in February with the launch of Sophos Home Premium.

4. Kaspersky Free

Kaspersky's first foray into free internet security

Operating system: Windows | Version: 18.0.0.405 | Features: Real-time scanning, Anti-phishing, Email scanning, Spyware protection

Kaspersky Free Antivirus
Combo
Accurate, reliable antivirus engine
Basics-only feature set

The paid-for version of Kaspersky's Windows security software frequently tops charts of best virus prevention solutions and AV-TEST once again gave it full marks across the board in its latest round of testing.

As you would expect, Kaspersky Free is a scaled down version of the full program - a tool that we really like (more on which below). The free version ditches additional features such as privacy protection and safe payment sandboxes to concentrate on powerful, no-frills and - most importantly - free protection for your PC. The result is a tremendously easy to use and navigate bit of software that does an effective job of keeping you protected from viruses.

Using the nuts and bolts real-world scanning engine of the paid-for suite, Kaspersky Free is fiendishly hard for viruses and trojan horses to break down. And we love that it doesn't constantly pester you with nudges to upgrade to the full version.

But, ironically, we will just for a moment, because Kasperksy Anti-Virus 2018 isn't expensive to buy and yet affords much better protection to your PC (or PCs). The standard price is $29.99 to protect three computers and includes more muscle when it comes to preventing ransomware, spyware and Trojans.

5. Avira Free Antivirus

Great antivirus, but a little noisy for our liking

Operating system: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS | Version: 2018 | Features: Virus detection, Phishing protection, Built-in VPN, System optimization tools

Avira Free Antivirus
Little impact on system performance
Installer promotes other Avira products

Avira Free Antivirus for Windows continues to score highly on AV-TEST's stringent testing program, quashing 99.7% of tested threats, and it generally doesn't put too big a burden on your hardware.

It has a clean, friendly interface - with a swish redesign ready for 2018 - and throws up minimal false positives. The introduction of a free security suite to optionally run alongside it – with ransomware and phishing protection, a 500MB/month VPN and various speedup promises – just sweetens the deal. This is one of the best free antivirus packages of 2018.

So why, then, have we dropped it from the top spot on our list, a position it's held for the past two years? It's the constant badgering. There's a certain level of popups and advertisements that's acceptable for a free product, and Avira has begun to cross the line. It's not as onerous as some – Comodo's over-enthusiastic interface comes to mind – but booting up your PC to see Avira shouting at you once again is jarring.

Review and where to download: Avira Free Antivirus

Best business antivirus

Each entry in this list has been carefully chosen for its business features, such as remote installation and central management. The best business antivirus software will have enterprise-level protection against threats, but that doesn't mean they have to cost a lot of money, either. The price per installation can sometimes be cheaper than even our recommended best antivirus packages.

An excellent business antivirus suite, giving you various tools such as virus protection, Firewall, email protection, anti-spam and the ability to sandbox applications for complete security. Avast Business Antivirus Pro (as opposed to the standard Avast Business Antivirus) also includes Sharepoint and Exchange protection, as well as a number of tools for your servers.

Symantec's first benefit is the company's Insight file reputation technology, an effective way to detect and block even the very latest undiscovered threats. Other layers of protection include virus protection, behaviour monitoring, intrusion protection, a firewall, and the 'Power Eraser' to remove stubborn threats and repair your system.

Best paid antivirus for pc mac android combo 2018 movies

This package makes reliable protection its top priority. Bitdefender products are loved by the independent testing labs, highly rated for malware detection, removal, performance and usability. Most of the features work automatically – anti-malware, firewall, web advisor, URL filtering – but you can also customise the product to control user actions.

This is Avira's main small business product. It takes all the core features you'd expect – antivirus, baseline network protection, web filtering – and extends them with file server protection and optimisation, along with application whitelisting and blacklisting.

A small business product, which comes ready to protect Windows PCs, file servers, Android and iOS devices. The desktop side of the package has all the usual quality Kaspersky modules – antivirus, antispam, a firewall, more – but the mobile security technologies are even more impressive.

On download and installation, you will see two main panes. The first is the free mac antivirus that ensures that you get the basic protection you need. In the basic protection pane there are two icons; computer protection and web and email protection. Both are enabled by default. In the second pane are more advanced options that you have to enable by purchasing the AVG security suite. These protect private data, protect against hacks and protect you during online transactions.

With the free AVG antivirus for mac you can do a full scan of the computer or scan a particular file. You can also customize the scanning as you wish. An advanced option that you have is to scan for programs that you may have downloaded unintentionally.

Other than the scanning that you set up, AVG gives your mac real-time protection by detecting and eliminating new threats as they arise. This way after the initial full scan your computer will remain protected without the need to repeat the scan.

The Sophos Home “Scan Now” button is placed at the top of the software’s main window making it easily accessible. This however is not the only reason why we will feature this as among the best free antivirus for mac. Just above the button are the system status and the protection status at the bottom. You get the information on whether you are protected or not at a glance. At the top of the page is a link to the Sophos home dashboard website. This is where the software can be controlled from.

Up to 10 macs can be managed using one account. However, you can only use the web interface to control these. Another downside is that the antivirus for MacOS Sierra does not offer protection against browser extensions and does not offer email attachment protection. The background scan it performs however does scan every file when it is open and prevents browsers from navigating websites that have malicious content.

Sophos Home scans the computer and its connections every now and then when you request so and in the background as the computer is in use. It also comes with parental controls. All these can be easily carried out thanks to the easy to use interface and remote accessibility. Full system scans take as long as several hours but this software has the least impact on the system’s operation.

A while back Avira was the best antivirus for mac. Recently however, it has been failing to detect some malware and as such some users find it non-satisfying. This does not mean that it is not a viable contender. After all, it is here among the best antivirus for macOS Sierra.

Part 2: Best Mac App Uninstaller 2018 – App Cleaner & Uninstaller App Cleaner is a little but powerful Mac App Uninstaller utility for you to purge undesirable apps from your Mac. It gives you the ability to dispose of the app related records.

Uninstaller software, in case you didn't know, is software you install for the purpose of uninstalling other software programs.

Confused? It does seem a little strange to install a program whose sole purpose is to remove other software, especially since you can uninstall programs easily from Control Panel with the Programs & Featuresapplet.

So why use one? Uninstaller tools are great when a program won't uninstall normally (more common than you think) or when you suspect that a program didn't uninstall completely (even more common).

Some uninstaller programs even improve on the program uninstall process in general by doing things like monitoring the install process to ensure a complete uninstall when you're ready, by adding easy 'uninstall' options to programs via the right-click menu, and lots more.

Below are the 17 best free uninstall software programs available right now:

If you're having trouble finding a free uninstaller software tool that will completely remove your antivirus program, see the last item on this page for some specific suggestions that should be very helpful.

IObit Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Includes several ways to start an uninstall

  • Remove programs in bulk, one after another

  • Scans your computer for leftover files to make sure an uninstall removes everything

  • Identifies bundleware

What We Don't Like

  • Although you can see which programs were installed as bundleware, you can't remove all of them at once

  • The installer might try to install other programs during setup

  • Shows ads sometimes

With IObit Uninstaller you can search for installed software, find and remove the programs taking up the most space or the ones you hardly use, uninstall browser toolbars and plugins, remove downloads made from Windows Update, and even see which of your programs could be updated to a newer version.

The best feature in IObit Uninstaller is the right-click context menu integration. You can right-click any program on your desktop and choose to remove it with IObit Uninstaller, without ever having to find the program's uninstall utility yourself.

In fact, you can even use the Easy Uninstall feature to delete programs that are running. Just drag the green dot on top of the program window and IObit Uninstaller will know exactly what to do to remove it.

After a program is deleted, you have the option to scan the registry and file system for leftover data that the installer may have missed, which is a great way to keep your computer free of clutter.

This is also true if you uninstall a program without using IObit Uninstaller — it will still prompt you to remove any leftover files and registry items that the regular uninstaller might have missed.

IObit Uninstaller can also create a System Restore point before making any changes, includes a file shredder, can force-remove a program, supports batch uninstalls, deletes bundled programs, and includes other useful tools, too.

  • You can view the registry entry for any program

  • Lets you sort the list of programs by size

  • It's easy to remove stubborn programs

What We Don't Like

Sort programs by their size or installation date, delete entries from the list of software, search through the programs, export a list of installed software to an HTML file, and look up information on any program in the Registry Editor, install folder, or internet.

You can also forcibly remove a program by eliminating any reference to it, both in the registry and file system.

Some features in Geek Uninstaller, like batch uninstalls, unfortunately only work in the professional version.

Geek Uninstaller can uninstall programs in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2008/2003.

Comodo Programs Manager

What We Like

  • Monitors installs to know how to uninstall the program

  • Lets you restore deleted programs

  • Integrates with Explorer for easy uninstalls

  • Able to delete Windows updates and drivers

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't work in Windows 10 or Windows 8

  • It's been discontinued since 2011

  • You have to restart your computer after installing it

Comodo is probably best known for their antivirus software, but they also have a wonderful program uninstaller called Comodo Programs Manager.

The main feature in Comodo Programs Manager that certainly stands out is the way it monitors program installs. After installing Comodo Programs Manager, any new software install will be monitored in real-time to keep track of every registry and file system change. Then, when you're ready to uninstall the program, Comodo Programs Manager knows exactly where to look for a thorough cleaning.

You can also restore a program from a backup if you accidentally removed it, remove programs from the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer, view the install folder of any program, and sort the list of installed software by name, company, size, the frequency of use, install folder, and install date.

Comodo Programs Manager can remove Windows Updates, drivers, and Windows features in addition to regular programs.

Comodo Programs Manager is only compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP. You'll need a different program from this list if you're looking for one that's compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 8.

Comodo Programs Manager would rank higher on this list except that because it has been discontinued, it hasn't been updated since 2011.

Advanced Uninstaller PRO

What We Like

  • Removes remnants often left after an uninstall

  • Can delete the entire program because it monitors the install

  • Works from Explorer for quick uninstalls

  • Lets you back up and restore whole programs

  • Includes other tools you might like

What We Don't Like

  • Some of the tools included are not free to use

  • No option to make a restore point before uninstalling software

  • The other tools might clutter the interface

Another free program remover is Advanced Uninstaller PRO. This program is basically like the others in this list. Common features like scanning for leftover registry items, context menu integration, and a search utility are included.

A feature called Monitored Installations is also available, which takes a snapshot of your computer before and after a program install. This allows Advanced Uninstaller PRO to easily identify the changes an install made, thus allowing it to remove every single file that the program modified during its installation process.

The only thing I don't like about Advanced Uninstaller PRO is that it can seem very cluttered with all the extra tools it has, such as a registry cleaner and file shredder.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP through Windows 10 are supported.

Puran Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Can identify possibly malicious programs

  • Applications can be removed in bulk

  • Has a clean and uncluttered interface

  • Lets you sort and search through the list

What We Don't Like

  • Hasn't been updated since 2013

  • The batch uninstall feature doesn't work as well as it does in similar programs

  • An ad is constantly visible at the bottom of the program

Puran Software, the maker of a few other popular system tools, also has a free uninstaller tool called Puran Uninstaller.

Puran Uninstaller is similar to some of the other programs from this list. It supports instant searching of installed software, batch uninstalls, force uninstalls, and allows individual program entries to be removed from the list of software.

Puran Uninstaller can also verify a program's identity by utilizing code signing. If an application's signature is found by Puran Uninstaller to be different than the known signature of that particular program, Puran Uninstaller will identify it as untrusted.

You can uninstall software with Puran Uninstaller so long as you're running any of the following versions of Windows (32-bit and 64-bit): Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Server 2008, or Server 2003.

Revo Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Provides a unique way to remove programs

  • Can scan for leftovers to remove everything

  • A portable version is available

  • Makes a restore point automatically

  • Includes other useful free tools

What We Don't Like

  • Batch removal isn't supported

  • Can't delete partially uninstalled programs

  • Doesn't always work as advertised

Revo Uninstaller is another software uninstaller program that has both a regular installable version as well as a portable one.

Hunter Mode is a unique feature that lets you manipulate a program by simply selecting its open window. You can uninstall the software, view its installation folder, kill the process, and even stop it from running at startup using this mode.

When uninstalling a program with Revo Uninstaller, you can run it in advanced mode, which scans the file system and registry for leftover items that are no longer needed but didn't get properly uninstalled with the built-in uninstaller. You can then delete some or all of the leftover items.

Automatic restore point creation is a big plus. Also, there's a junk file cleaner and privacy cleaner included, among other extra tools.

I like Revo Uninstaller, but because there's also a professional version, it lacks a handful of the same features you'll find in some of the other uninstaller tools from this list, like removing partially uninstalled applications and support for batch removals.

Windows Server plus Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP users can use Revo Uninstaller.

CCleaner

What We Like

  • You can sort programs by size to find the largest ones

  • Lets you search through the list of installed programs

  • Program entries can be renamed and deleted

  • Includes lots of other tools

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't support batch uninstalls

  • You have to run the uninstalls manually

  • Only works from the program window, not Explorer

CCleaner is best known as a free registry cleaner and junk file removal program, but it can also be used as a free software uninstaller.

You can search for installed software, remove and rename entries from the program list, and sort by name, installation date, size, or version number.

It's a wise choice to use CCleaner for removing programs because you can quickly switch over to its file and registry cleaner to sweep up any residual files that an uninstaller may have left behind.

Open CCleaner's uninstaller from the Tools menu, where you can find other useful tools like a duplicate file finder, hard drive wiper, and startup manager.

CCleaner works with all Windows versions from Windows 10 down through Windows XP. In may also be compatible with older versions of Windows.

Absolute Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Organizes large programs into their own category

  • Deletes invalid program shortcut

  • Supports batch uninstalls

  • Also deletes Windows updates

What We Don't Like

  • The search function doesn't work well

  • Setup tries to install another program

  • Batch uninstalling isn't very easy

Absolute Uninstaller is a free program remover from Glarysoft, the same developers of Glary Undelete, a very popular file recovery tool.

Batch uninstalls are supported so you can check multiple programs to remove them each consecutively, and newly installed programs are clearly marked as such.

Absolute Uninstaller has an AutoFix invalid entries option in the menu that can scan all the installed programs to find any that don't refer to an actual program you have installed. This may happen if you've removed a program in the past but the entry remained in the list of installed software.

You can also modify the name of any of the listed programs as well as change the uninstall command line string.

Absolute Uninstaller can also remove Windows Update installs and has a search function, though it's not nearly as good as the ones in most other programs I've reviewed here.

Absolute Uninstaller can be used on Windows 10 through Windows NT, as well as Windows Server 2003.

PC Decrapifier

What We Like

  • Can remove programs in bulk

  • Lets you make a restore point before uninstalling software

  • Shows how many other users removed the program

  • Most programs can be uninstalled automatically

  • It's a portable application

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't let you search for a program from the list

  • No filtering options (e.g., a size or name filter)

  • Can't uninstall programs directly from Explorer

PC Decrapifier is a portable program that takes up less than 2 MB of space and supports batch uninstalls. An easy to follow wizard walks you through the process of choosing what you'd like to remove and lets you create a restore point before deleting anything.

Some programs can be uninstalled automatically and very quickly. For others, you must uninstall them manually, clicking through their uninstall wizards like you would normally.

While testing PC Decrapifier, I selected four programs I wanted to uninstall. Only one required me to walk through a regular uninstall wizard while the others were removed automatically without any prompts whatsoever.

Next to each program is a percentage of other PC Decrapifier users that have removed that program, which is an awesome way to quickly determine whether you should also uninstall it.

Unfortunately, PC Decrapifier provides no way to filter or search through the list of software.

PC Decrapifier works with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, and 2000.

MyUninstaller

What We Like

What We Don't Like

  • It was discontinued in 2017

  • Removing programs in batch doesn't work very well

  • No Explorer context menu option

MyUninstaller is another free program uninstaller that's a bit simpler than the others in this list.

It has an easy to understand interface that lets you export the list of programs to a file, remove application entries from the list, and sort all the software by name, version number, company, install folder, and install date.

MyUninstaller can also be switched to an advanced mode that supports batch uninstalls.

MyUninstaller is completely portable and is just 30 KB in size.

You can use MyUninstaller with nearly all versions of Windows, including Windows 10 down through Windows 98.

Ashampoo Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Monitors program installs for more effective uninstallations

  • Cleans up residual files after each uninstall

  • Multiple programs can be selected at once to be removed (batch uninstall)

  • Rates your programs to help identify them

  • Includes several other programs as part of the suite

What We Don't Like

  • Requires a [free] activation key

  • Might be overwhelming if you don't want all the other tools

Ashampoo Uninstaller is a beast of a program. It, of course, deletes programs like you'd expect with a software uninstaller, but it does so much more.

There are multiple reasons we've added Ashampoo's program to this list, one of which is for its ability to monitor program installs. Right-click a program you're going to install and choose to open it with Ashampoo Uninstaller, and it will record any disk writes and registry changes.

The benefit to logging an install like this is so that Ashampoo Uninstaller can know exactly what happened to the computer during the installation, something that's of utmost importance if you plan to completely remove the application later. This also means you can remove the program with just one click.

Ashampoo Uninstaller also lets you remove entries from the list of programs, clean up related files after an installation, uninstall programs in bulk, remove a specific application that was installed in a bundle, create what are called Snapshots any time you want to compare the state of your computer before and after any period of time (not just in relation to program installs), generate a report of installed programs, and group software together for easier management.

Monitored installs and the Snapshots feature are helpful in other situations, too, like when you suspect that a program is doing something nefarious or malicious. You can browse through the logged data to see exactly what Ashampoo Uninstaller caught the program doing during setup, and the Snapshots function is perfect for seeing which files and registry items were added, removed, and changed between two points in time.

Here are some other things you can do with this program that don't necessarily have anything to do with program uninstalls: clean up junk files, defrag disks, manage startup items, change file associations, permanently delete files and folders, find invalid shortcuts, and more.

During installation, you're told that you need to enter a license key to use the software. Don't worry — it's absolutely free; just use the Get free activation key button to open the Ashampoo website and learn how to get it.

I tested Ashampoo Uninstaller in Windows 10 and Windows 7 without any issues. It officially supports Windows 8, too.

The installer for Ashampoo Uninstaller might ask you to buy some other programs from Ashampoo, either after installation and/or when you open the program. You can ignore those requests if you don't want to add anything else to your computer.

ZSoft Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Lets you search through the list of installed software

  • Easy to use

  • Monitors installs

What We Don't Like

  • Can't sort programs by size

  • Hasn't been updated in many years

  • Doesn't support batch uninstalls

ZSoft Uninstaller can analyze your computer before you install a program and then re-analyze it afterward. This creates a section of missing time ZSoft Uninstaller can then use to find what changes were made to the computer during the install.

This would be a great feature to ensure that the uninstaller can remove 100% of the program, but it's painfully slow. While testing it, the initial analysis didn't complete even after an hour had passed.

The interface of ZSoft Uninstaller isn't organized very well. You can only sort the list of programs by name and install date, but you have to find the option in the menu to do so (and even then, the result just isn't very satisfying).

In short, ZSoft Uninstaller shouldn't be your first pick when choosing a good program uninstaller. I recommend trying any of the above programs in this list before settling here.

However, I've kept the entry in our list because you might have better results.

I tested ZSoft Uninstaller in both Windows 10 and Windows 7, so it should work with other versions, too, like Windows 8 and XP.

OESIS Endpoint Assessment

What We Like

  • Programs are removed automatically (you don't have to click anything)

  • Checks for and deletes any leftover remnants after each uninstall

  • Lets you remove programs in batch

  • No installation is necessary because it's portable

What We Don't Like

  • Not every program installed to your computer can be removed

  • Doesn't let you delete programs straight from Explorer

OESIS Endpoint Assessment includes a tool called the OESIS Removal Module (formerly called AppRemover). It's another software uninstaller with a limitation in that not all installed programs can be removed.

Programs identified as antivirus software, file sharing applications, toolbars, and backup programs can be uninstalled with the OESIS Removal Module tool, but nothing else.

The OESIS Removal Module tool uninstalls the above software silently, with no intervention on your part. It also supports batch uninstalls and automatically scans for leftover files and registry entries to ensure that the entire program, including all its references, are deleted.

The OESIS Removal Module tool is a portable program, which means you don't need to install it to your computer to use it.

The OESIS Removal Module tool should work with Windows 10 through Windows XP.

Anvi Uninstaller

What We Like

  • Organizes programs into categories to better find what you want

  • Includes a search tool

  • Can be used without installation

  • Deletes patches installed with Windows Update, too

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't support batch uninstalls

  • Won't scan the computer for file remnants

  • Updates are no longer released

Anvi Uninstaller is a very basic software uninstaller that has no unique features. It's completely portable, less than 2 MB in size, and can view all the installed programs in one list or see just the largest or most recently installed software.

You can search for programs in the list as well as view any of the installed programs in Windows Explorer to know exactly where it's installed.

A restore point is created before uninstalling a program, but that's the only other feature included. Batch uninstalls and scanning for leftover registry items, for example, aren't allowed.

You can also remove Windows patches with Anvi Uninstaller.

Anvi Uninstaller runs on Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP.

Free Uninstall It

What We Like

Best mac os apps 2018
  • Has a unique way of removing troublesome software

  • Restore points can be made before uninstalls

  • Supports multiple ways to view the list of programs

What We Don't Like

  • A major feature in the program might not work for you

  • Doesn't support batch uninstalls

Free Uninstall It is another program that can forcibly remove an application if it can't be removed by normal means. It does so by scanning for registry and file items that refer to the program in question, and then lets you remove them.

One difference in this program and some of the other programs from this list that forcibly remove programs is that Free Uninstall It can remove software by an executable even if it's not listed in the list of installed programs.

Fortunately, unlike some similar programs, there's an option to create a System Restore point before removing software with Free Uninstall It.

An installation monitor is included with Free Uninstall It that's supposed to track how a program is installed to provide an easy way to remove it, but I was unable to get it to work properly.

This program should work with Windows 10 down through Windows XP.

of 18

Free Uninstaller

What We Like

  • There's a search tool included

  • Can remove programs in batch

  • It's portable

  • You can search an installed program online for more information

What We Don't Like

  • No longer gets new software updates or improvements

App trap

Free Uninstaller is a very basic program that's basically no different than the built-in software uninstaller in Windows except that it's portable and supports batch uninstalling, among a few other things.

You can search for programs in the list, look up software online to find more information, remove entries from the list of programs, and open the registry item that refers to the program.

An HTML file can be created that includes tons of useful information in a really nice format, such as the name, publisher, size, frequency of use (even with the number of times you've used it), version number, EXE, icon file location, install location, and more.

I tested Free Uninstaller in Windows 10 and Windows XP, but it should also work just fine with other versions of Windows like Windows 8/7.

Antivirus Software Uninstallers

If you plan on reinstalling one of these programs after uninstalling the current version, make sure you've safely backed up the license information to avoid having to repurchase a product key.

All the programs listed above should be able to remove antivirus software, but if not, the developer's dedicated uninstaller should do the trick.

Since antivirus programs are integrated much more tightly into Windows to protect it from threats, removing these programs can be especially difficult for the general programs in this list.

These dedicated uninstaller programs are used for removing the listed applications only. Using one when you don't have the associated program won't do anything.

If you are in search of a tool to clear the redundant files from your iOS device, do give those posts a look. And to deal with these problems fast and easy it needs to be the best cleaner for Mac. The Best Cleaner for Mac 2017 Operating System We all know how hard it is to find a thing in a place full of trash and stuff.

Quick navigation

Background

Starting with macOS Sierra, Apple offered an elegant space-clearing solution feature, Optimized Storage.

Optimized Storage in macOS Sierra and later can save space by storing your content in the cloud and making it available on demand. When storage space is needed, files, photos, movies, email attachments, and other files that you seldom use are stored in the cloud automatically. Each file stays right where you last saved it, and downloads when you open it. Files that you’ve used recently remain on your Mac, along with optimized versions of your photos.

The feature helps us deal with junk like duplicates, old email attachments and downloads – and automatically sifts through them to delete the files or move them to the cloud.

But, instead of deleting them, it mainly moves the junk files to iCloud. The result of the optimization is more free space on your hard drive and many-many gigabytes of cloud storage taken up.

While it’s an amazing built-in feature, it doesn’t help many heavy Mac users.

Why you need a Mac cleaner software

You can guess the first reason on your own. It’s not possible to keep paying Apple according to the storage space taken up. As we said, Optimized Storage would be moving your junk files to iCloud. As it happens, the iCloud space is limited. When you cross the 5GB free limit, you will have to start paying for the extra space you are getting. When you have GBs of junk data to keep on the cloud, this doesn’t make sense.

Using a Mac cleaner software, you will be able to do this without iCloud. The point is that you don’t have to spend extra money if you can find free space in your Mac itself. Apart from storage optimization and space-saving, there are some other reasons below why you need a Mac cleaner software.

  • Mac cleaner software helps you remove GBs of application language data, which is often unused.
  • These tools can also remove cache files on regular basis, saving a lot of space.
  • System Log files are stored by System Apps that runs from the moment you boot up to OS X Desktop.
  • Photos(iPhoto) Stores cache files, temporary data, backup data, photos, videos and thumbnails which takes several gigabytes in few months usage.
  • iTunes Stores plenty of Media data and temporary files, settings into your Hard disk drive, whose too-small SSD is constantly on the verge of filling up.
  • If you use XCode or other Development Tools, then the application stores tons of user data, application data for rendering and run time purposes.
  • There are other Development junk files, such as support files, Caches, Frameworks and temporary files are stored and left.
  • Your Mail Attachments from year old emails that you wanted to delete are stored locally under your Mail App.
  • Your Mac can slow way down and exhibit all sorts of misbehavior if you run out of disk space entirely (or come close to it).
  • If you are preparing your Mac for sale, then you will want to give it a bit of a clean before you show it off to a potential customer.

When you use a Mac cleaner software, you can take care of all these in a single click. You don’t have to worry about visiting individual directories and getting things cleaner. In short, a Mac cleaner software will help you intoxicate your Mac in every manner. Now that you have an idea, we will check out the best Mac cleaner software available right now.

CleanMyMac X is the best Mac cleaning software

We had to use a number of Mac cleaning apps in order to find the best one. In the process, however, we had to set some reference points. We had used the following criteria to find the most effective tool for cleaning a Mac.

  • Does the software have an intuitive and easy User Interface?
  • Does the app make it easy to search for junk, cache and broken files in the system?
  • Does it help you make full uninstalling procedures with all the unnecessary apps, so you can remove out-of-date software and applications in the proper way.
  • Can you locate duplicates and similar files named differently in your system?
  • Does the app provide smart deletion? This supposes evaluating how safe it is to delete each file and whether its removal will not be felt by the user of the operation system.
  • Does it clean a digital history? After the work of a good cleaner, nobody ever has the chance of determining what pages were recently opened and what information was sent or received.
  • Does the app provide rich tools for organizing and maintaining the OS X system?
  • Does it add the extended support of the new Apple File System (APFS)?
  • Is the app available in different languages? A universal solution is usually a multi-language one so it can be used effectively in different countries and by different users.

After checking 20+ Mac cleaning apps out there in the market, we decided that CleanMyMac X is the best option for most people. Coming from a trusted developer like Macpaw, CleanMyMac X was a part of our preliminary list from the beginning.

What is CleanMyMac X? Why call it X?

CleanMyMac is an all-in-one cleaning software for devices running macOS. It’s developed and distributed by a company named Macpaw, which develops other utility programs as well. However, CleanMyMac can be by far the biggest success — for all the good reasons.

With the 10th anniversary edition, CleanMyMac has completed its transformation into a comprehensive cleanup, optimization, and management tool. Why call it X? Macpaw explains:

Firstly, because this year it’s our 10th anniversary and the X is our tribute to that and the first CleanMyMac created by Oleksandr Kosovan back in 2008. Next up, we believe this version is much more than another numerical in the line — it is X times better.

Macpaw developers have done a great job at making this special version of the Mac cleaning software even special. We were amazed to find such a huge number of features in this package.

What does CleanMyMac X do?

CleanMyMac X lets you clean your Mac device from every aspect. You can get rid of unwanted files, optimize performance of apps and even take care of some maintenance tasks. There are also some additional features like Software Uninstaller and Updater. Altogether, it’s a 360-Degree cleaning package for Mac.

The tool can also help you deal with optimization. Experts suggest that you should use both CleanMyMac X and Optimized Storage from Apple. This way, you will find enough space to store files on Mac, while moving junk stuff to available iCloud space.

This quick promo from Macpaw will showcase how-it-works:

What’s new in CleanMyMac X?

The new CleanMyMac X cares for all Macs (starting from macOS 10.10 versions). Let’s have a quick look at the top features.

  • Smart Scan lets you perform a single scan, which would understand the condition of your Mac, help you take decisions thereafter.
  • CleanMyMac Assistant is a virtual assistant for useful advices. When you perform certain actions, you will be given the right prompts
  • Malware Remover is an additional module in CleanMyMac X. This module will scan your Mac for an immense variety of malware and remove them instantly.
  • Optimization module that helps you keep your Mac snappy and performance-friendly. This module will scan your device for various agents and services that work in background.
  • Space Lens analyzes your macOS disk and understand the files taking up space.
  • 3x Faster Scans are also offered by CleanMyMac X. When compared to CleanMyMac 3, you’ll be able to finish scanning files/apps/system as quickly as possible

These features surely make CleanMyMac X one of the most comprehensive Mac cleaner software out there.

Is CleanMyMac X safe to use?

A BIG YES.

Just like its previous versions, CleanMyMac X is 100% safe to use. You don’t have to worry about threats like data theft or privacy violation. Macpaw is a trusted company when it comes to user-privacy and the essential forms of data management.

Coming to the software, CleanMyMac X does not tamper with your Mac’s core settings. There are a number of exceptions and rules to make sure that system files are not affected. Even if you try to remove these files manually, you will be notified.

Altogether, CleanMyMac X offers one of the best levels of security and privacy for Mac users.

We believe it’s something great to start with.

Our review of CleanMyMac X

So far, you have been given the perfect outline of CleanMyMac X and how it works. Now, we will move onto our hands-on review of CleanMyMac X. We have been using this software for a week on our MacBook Air, and we’ve made up some impressions already. In the following section, you will find a comprehensive yet brief review of CleanMyMac X.

Design

A revamped User Interface is one of the best features in CleanMyMac X, you know. It’s got a lot of rounded corners, brightly-colored icons, faux transparent backgrounds, and a nice ombre effect throughout. It’s simply beautiful, and it helps everyone manage their Mac without feeling like rocket science.

Once you have downloaded and installed CleanMyMac X on your Mac, you will be able to see the Welcome Windows. As it says, you can start a Smart Scan to understand the basic issues with your Mac. It needs to be noted that you will be finding not only the issues but also the areas of potential improvement. Just hit Scan button and CleanMyMac X will be exploring your Mac device for the possible scenarios.

Apart from Smart Scan, CleanMyMac X is divided into five main sections — Cleanup, Protection, Applications, Speed and Files. We will go through these sections individually, but now, keep in mind that all these options are accessible from the sidebar. You have a way-out if you just wanted to check your Mac for some potential malware threats.

You can also go into the individual features. For instance, you will find a feature named “Trash Bins” under the Cleanup module. You can open this section if you just want to remove Trash content from your Mac in a single click. Similarly, apart from module-based clearing, CleanMyMac X lets you go deep into stuff. The best part of all these is that each window tells you what the particular feature would do.

Last but not the least, CleanMyMac X Interface consists of CleanMyMac Assistant as well. You can access the feature by clicking the icon on the top-right portion of the window. It’s a really useful feature. If you cannot find a particular section, you can simply ask the Assistant. There is also a Silent Mode where the Assistant does not provide voluntary response.

Best Disk Cleaner For Mac 2018

Altogether, the design aspect of CleanMyMac X is top-notch. We haven’t seen many Mac cleaner UIs that make the cleaning process this easier.

Functions

As we said earlier, CleanMyMac X is a super-feature-rich iteration of the cleaning tool. Compared to the old versions, you have a lot of functions to explore. To make things easy, CleanMyMac X has broken down things to five sections. We’ll have a look at all the five now.

Cleanup

This is where you intoxicate your Mac — that is, where you get rid of the unwanted stuff. Depending on the various needs, you can choose from the five available options as well.

System Junk Scan takes care of the junk files in your Mac. User cache files, log files and old updates etc. will be detected by CleanMyMac X. All this information is smart-selected and you can remove them without any fear about system crashes.

This is where you intoxicate your Mac — that is, where you get rid of the unwanted stuff. Depending on the various needs, you can choose from the five available options as well.

Photo Junk does two things mainly. First, it would optimize the photograph library you have in your Mac. In the second part, it would remove local iCloud cache files as well. Thanks to smart-select, CleanMyMac X will not tamper your important photographs.

Mail Attachments is a great feature if you use native mail clients on your Mac. There is a chance that email attachments are taking up so much space. This feature of CleanMyMac X would remove all the attachments while optimizing the whole data storage section.

iTunes Junk is perhaps the most important feature in CleanMyMac X Cleanup section. This will remove junk files related to the iTunes application, such as device backups, old updates, copies of iOS apps etc. You would also get rid of broken downloaded files, which may be taking up space.

Trash Bins is also a superb cleaning feature in the Cleanup section. Instead of cleaning bins from individual drives, CleanMyMac X lets you do that in a single click. You will also be able to bypass Finder errors that you may otherwise come across.

Considering all these, Cleanup section of CleanMyMac X is quite comprehensive. From our test, CleanMyMac X removing the massive amounts of unused junk. One of the best examples of this is when it scrubs the junk out of iTunes. Before reviewing CleanMyMac X, we had no idea that iTunes left so much junk scattered all over our computer. Before this turns in to a rant about iTunes, the reason that made an impression on us is that it demonstrates the level of thought put into this software. CleanMyMac is thorough.

Protection

Of course, your Mac needs protection. Understanding this, Macpaw has added some security and privacy-oriented features in the latest CleanMyMac X.

Malware Removal is the biggest feature in this sector. With this, you will be able to scan your Mac device to find possible threats like viruses, adware, spyware etc. CleanMyMac X is using trusted malware databases to recognize the threats. The database is regularly updated as well. Of course, we couldn’t find any malware in our device, but you should give it a try. It’s quite unscientific to say that Macs cannot get malware. So, as something that can protect your Mac from further trouble, this feature is just awesome for CleanMyMac X.

Privacy is yet another useful section in the CleanMyMac X Protection section. You will be able to deal with many aspects of digital privacy here. For instance, CleanMyMac X will remove browsing traces, such as your browsing history and autofill data. Chat data from apps like Skype and Messages will also be taken care of by the powerful engines. In the results, CleanMyMac X actually lets you go deep into every app and see what can be used to trace you — and remove them all.
If you ask us, Protection section of CleanMyMac X offers us peace of mind.

Speed

Optimization part of this section helps you recognize and quit apps that take up a lot of resources. If you did not know, hung applications can keep consuming a lot of resources. CleanMyMac X will recognize such apps and quit them. This section also shows you the Login Items and Launch Agents. In short, CleanMyMac X lets you optimize how your Mac behaves when it’s booted up.
Maintenance part of CleanMyMac X section is even better. In a single click, you can improve performance of drives, eliminate application errors and improve search performance. Indeed, CleanMyMac X does a lot of things in the background. The tool will show you a bunch of options like Cleaning RAM, Flush DNS Cache and Reindex Spotlight. Select the ones you need and hit the ‘Run’ button. You’re all good to go.
We really loved these features, mainly because we had a snappier Mac experience after using them.

Application management

Application Management section of CleanMyMac X can be divided into just two. Both these features, though, are just awesome.

Uninstaller in CleanMyMac X not only shows your applications but also helps you uninstall them effectively. Instead of checking out individual apps, CleanMyMac X will list the apps based on name or size. You can also filter apps based on categories like Store, Vendor and Usage nature. At the end of the day, you can select as many apps you want and uninstall them completely. CleanMyMac X makes sure that the apps are removed from your system 100%.
Updater does exactly what you thought it’d do from the name. It lists the updates available for the apps you have installed on the device. Compared to the App Store or official websites, data is represented in an easy-to-use manner. You can hit the Update button to update the apps individually.

We’re not big fans the Updater, but Uninstaller can be productive at times.

File management

Just like Applications, Files section of CleanMyMac X has two features only, but both are awesome, at least for us.
Large & Old Files feature of CleanMyMac X lets you find large and old files on your Mac. Not only that, the tool will display all the files based on directory, size and access date. For instance, you can know the files you haven’t accessed for a month or so. This makes really easy to remove files, which may be consuming a lot of space from your Mac.
Shredder feature allows you to remove sensitive files with 100% confidence. For shredder option, in our opinion, it’s useful for Macs that run spinning hard disk drives (HDDs), but not for SSDs (solid-state drive), because emptying the Trash is enough to make those files unrecoverable due to the way TRIM enabled SSDs manage data.

Again, be careful with shredder option because you won’t be able to get your data back if you accidentally “shred” the wrong file or folder.

Long story short, CleanMyMac X lets you stop worry about data security and files taking up space.

Availability and pricing

For

CleanMyMac X works on macOS 10.10 and later, including the newly released macOS Mojave. A free trial version is available for download.

Macpaw is charging $39.95 per year for a subscription to CleanMyMac, or $89.95 for a one-time purchase. You can purchase it from official website store, or get it from SetApp subscription.

Our final take on CleanMyMac X

If you ask us, CleanMyMac X is a great addition to any Mac out there. According to our experience, we were able to save a lot of storage space and enhance performance of our MacBook Air, enormously. Considering the amount we have to pay, we believe the program is just awesome. That’s also the reason why we stick to the opinion that CleanMyMac X is the best Mac cleaner software out there right now.

Pros:

  • Beautiful interface.
  • Simple and safe cleaning.
  • A full range of cleaning options and advanced tools like an uninstaller, general maintenance, online privacy functions, etc.
  • Smart – You will be notified of important files before cleaning.

Cons:

  • The Monitoring Menu isn’t that effective.

Other options for consideration

This is not to say that CleanMyMac X is the only option when you need a Mac cleaner software. In fact, we’d come across some of the coolest options too. So, if you are not ready to spend on CleanMyMac X, you can try one of the following tools.

CCleaner Professional ($24.95)

For years, the standard in PC cleaner software has been CCleaner, and now Mac users can benefit from the experience that the Piriform developers bring to the table. CCleaner Professional is quick and easy to use program, which speeds up your Mac and secures it. Although CCleaner has a free version, there are only two basic features described on the website as “faster computer” and “privacy protection”. At the premium level with price $24.95 you have Automatic Browser Cleaning, Real-time Monitoring, Automatic Updating and what they call “Priority Support”.

There are 3 tabs – “Cleaner”, “tools” and “option”. These 3 ways CCleaner helps you remove junk files, trash files, unused data, unwanted files and software and many more such things which decrease mac’s performance, enabling it to run faster and smoother. It also removes cookies, browsing history and saved passwords, making your online browsing more secure, so no one can misuse your online. CCleaner cleared almost 3000 files in one go from my system. So, it is effective.

Though CCleaner Professional has many helpful features, it lacks in some things. CCleaner for Mac is beta version , it is not fully featured. Some features are missing from it which are available in the original version. CCleaner is limited to some browsers such as Safari, Firefox and chrome to delete cookies and trash files from them. Windows version of CCleaner has more features.

Intego Mac Washing Machine X9 ($29.99)

Intego Mac Washing Machine is a Mac cleaner that makes it easy to get rid of junk files that slow down your Mac.

This app completes three separate but complementary functions. It scans for unused or obsolete files that can be deleted, it identifies duplicate files, and it lets you manage your desktop. Through the app’s intuitive interface, you can quickly access all features and have your computer running more smoothly in no time.

Overall, the app is fine. It’s definitely worth checking out if you are looking for an app that helps you organize your storage drives and removes unnecessary files.

But here is no quick-look support for files preview and the trial version of this app can only complete the preliminary steps of each function. You get to see what each phase of the scanning process looks like, but to get any real functionality you’ll have to pay $29.99 for an unrestricted license.

Macbooster 7 (start from $2.49/month)

MacBooster from IObit is a powerful Mac maintenance tool for cleaning up Mac computers, and offers good functionality for its class. MacBooster and CleanMyMac X have quite similar functionality, offering users a number of cleaning options and tools: system cleanup, finding duplicates, deleting large files, uninstalling applications, protecting your Mac from virus and malware, etc.

Start by clicking Clean and Boost for example and four sections – Internet Security, System Cleanup, System Optimization and Disk Clean – are scanned for errors, threats and redundant files. You’re shown how much space will be removed or how many issues require fixing, then find yourself invited to the click the Fix button.

We really like Macbooster’s performance boost tool, which basically lets you shutdown low-level services to speed up your Mac further. If you’re a power user looking to deep-clean your Mac, give the 14-day trial a whirl, after that, it requires a $2.49/month subscription.

DaisyDisk ($9.99)

DaisyDisk is a beautiful yet different disk space analyzer that scans the drives on your Mac and gives you a visual overview of what’s eating up space on your Mac. It displays files in a pinwheel-shaped disk map, letting you quickly locate and clean up large files. You can use the built-in QuickLook preview to see what you might want to get rid of (you can also reveal in Finder to take a closer look).

There’s a collection drawer where you can stage files (or entire segments) for trashing. Once you’ve browsed through and collected things you don’t need, one click clears them out. DaisyDisk is available for just $9.99 from the Mac App Store as well as from their own website (standalone edition). The standalone edition from their own website offers some additional features since it is not bound by Apple’s sandboxing rules.

We really like DaisyDisk’s design with its circular visualizations! But it’s important to note that DaisyDisk does not warn you if you delete something that is needed for your system or even for any application. So please use DaisyDisk carefully.

Mac Cleaner For Free

AppCleaner (free)

Why do you let your pretty Mac get cluttered with apps? AppCleaner is a small and simple utility we’ll include it anyway, because it comes in handy when it comes time to uninstall an application and it is FREE. Sure, the Mac makes it a lot easier to get rid of unwanted software than Windows, but don’t be thoroughly cleaned — even if you’ve dragged a Mac application icon into the Trash, that doesn’t delete the Mac app’s entire footprint. Often times the app will leave behind configuration files, cache folders and other remnants that occupy disk space.

AppCleaner does a serviceable job of locating all the files associated with the app, and provides an index so you know just how much space they’re taking up. Once you’ve got them all accounted for, click the Delete button and banish them forever.

Wrap up

In short, CleanMyMac X is an all-around great Mac maintenance tool for most people because it offers a great combination of useful features with a sleek interface of amazing power and beauty.

Of course, if you’re a power user, you will probably prefer to perform cleaning operations on your own via Terminal or other OS X system apps.

But if you’re a bit uncomfortable with diving into Terminal, and think about that time, and possible confusion, CleanMyMac is about as good as you’re going to find when it comes to apps of this nature.

It should also be noted that CleanMyMac X is used by more than 5 Million Mac users across the globe. Just in case you didn’t know, it’s recommended by popular websites like TheNextWeb and MacWorld, which also show the trustworthiness. And, if nothing is enough, you can take our words that CleanMyMac X will speed up and secure your Mac like never before.

You can download CleanMyMac X for free from Macpaw official website.

It’s also available on Setapp.

HomePCMac7 Best Disc Cleaner Apps for Mac You Should Use

There are a ton of things Macs are inherently good at, managing its storage is not one of them. Your favorite apps quickly fill up your Mac’s storage space and before you know it, you are running low on storage. You can try to uninstall apps manually or find and delete large files to free up some storage, but that is going to take a lot of time. Manually cleaning up your Mac can turn into a nightmare and that’s when you know your way around it. If you don’t want to deal with the headache and still want to free up some storage, there are some great third party utilities which will help keep your Mac tidy and free up some unused storage in the process. So, without any further ado, here are the 7 best disk cleaner apps for macOS you can use:

1. Onyx

Onyx from Titanium Software is a versatile tool which can help you verify your start up disk, execute hidden features, run maintenance script, automate tasks, clean up your Mac and much more. However, today we will focus only on its clean up capabilities. Although a bit more complex than other apps on this list, if used properly this can become the only disk cleaner app you will ever need. It has a minimal looking UI with all features getting a separate tab on the app’s launch screen.

When you will click on the “Cleaning” tab, you will see the different levels at which you can perform the cleaning tasks. You can clean up unwanted system files, residual app files, system logs and much more. It lets you scan all the files on the system and you can select and delete files which are not of use to anymore. Heck, you can even delete system fonts if you want to. You can go really granular with this. As I mentioned earlier, this can be the only tool you will ever need.

However, there are certain problems which can occur if you are not careful with this. As you can access and delete the system files, there is a chance you will end up messing up your computer if you are not careful. But, if you use it correctly, it will help in freeing up space on your Mac, you didn’t even know existed. As if it was not enough, it’s also totally free.

Install: (Free)

2. CleanMyMac 3

CleanMyMac has been hailed as the best disk cleanup utility app you can get and rightly so. The app looks as phenomenal as it performs. It has a modern UI with very cool graphics to go with it whenever you are scanning or deleting files . You can scan the whole computer at once or a part of it depending upon which type of file you want to delete. As you can see in the picture I can release more than 5 GB of space on my Mac after I perform the clean up. It also has a built-in app uninstaller which lets you uninstall the apps along with all their residual files.

The best part is that it does all that without touching your system files, hence you can never accidentally cause harm to your Mac. What’s the caveat you ask, well it’s one pricey software. It has a free version but that will only let you clean up 500 MB of data at one time. If you want to take advantage of this app, you will need to shell out the money for the pro version.

Install: ($39.95)

3. AppCleaner

Mac App Store is full of incredible applications. One of the biggest reasons some people prefer Macs is the collection of apps available on its App Store. We install and uninstall many apps to choose the right ones which fit our needs. However, the inbuilt app installer in the Mac is inefficient. Whenever we delete an app, more often than not it leaves its residual files intact. Over time, these residual files can take a lot of space. It is here that AppCleaner comes to our rescue. When you uninstall an app using this app, all the residual files are deleted along with the app itself. It is a very handy tool to have and is totally free.

Install: (Free)

4. App Cleaner

Although it sounds exactly like the previous app on our list, I can assure that “App Cleaner” is different. Apart from having ‘a space’ in the middle, there’s one key difference between both these apps, which makes this one better. Not only you can uninstall the current app, it can also scan for all the residual files left by previous uninstalled apps. Thus, you can even clear the residual files of those apps which were not uninstall using this app, a feature missing in our previous app.

Also, it loads up all your app directories allowing you to uninstall the apps with just one click. You don’t have to drag and drop or do anything like that. However, all these features are going to cost you, as its free version just lets you scan the directory and not delete them.

Install: (Free/$3.99)

5. Duplicate File Finder

One of the major reasons behind us running out of storage on our Macs is the presence of duplicate files. You might have downloaded something twice, or created a duplicate just for a back up or took too many pictures of the same object. In any case, these duplicate files eat away a lot of space. Duplicate Finder does what its name suggests. It finds all the duplicate files on your system and lets you delete them. I can’t even tell you how much space I have been able to free up on my Mac just by removing the duplicate files.

Gemini 2 is one of the more popular app which also does this. However, I included Duplicate Finder instead of Gemini 2 on our list because it performs the same while costing half of Gemini 2. You can also check out our list of the best duplicate file finders if you want more options.

Install: ($9.99)

6. Dr. Cleaner

Dr. Cleaner made it on our list because its free version is pretty incredible. If you just need to run a scan and get rid of junk files on your Mac without costing you any money, this is the app for you. Rest of its features like app uninstaller, and duplicate files finder are reserved for the Pro versions but junk scanning and removal is totally free. I have noticed that it does not find as much junk as CleanMyMac does, but considering it is free, it holds up it ground well. You can try the pro version, it will still cost only half of what CleanMyMac does.

Install: (Free/$14.99)

7. CCleaner

CCleaner, the popular disc cleaning app for Android and Windows has launched its Mac client recently, hence we thought to give it a shot. Launching the app, we were a little disappointed as the UI looks a little bit outdated. However, considering looks are not everything, we ran the app. It could only detect junk files of around 2 GB, much lesser than CleanMyMac. One could suppose that the pro version costing quite a bit of money can improve its performance but sadly the pro version only adds automation and better customer support. It doesn’t do anything to improve on the performance side of things. Still, its a pretty good software if you want a free disk cleaner app for your Mac.

Install: (Free/$24.99)

Many external hard drives use USB 2.0 connections, but for faster speeds you'll want USB 3.0 or ideally the newer USB Type-C connection. You'll need to ensure your PC or laptop also has a USB Type-C port.

You'll also need to think about how much storage space you need. The best external hard drives offer a range of capacities. We'd recommend 500GB to start with, as that gives you plenty of space to store your files without costing too much money.

However, if you deal in large files, such as high resolution photos and videos, then you may want to consider buying a bigger drive, with external hard drives offering terabytes (TB) of storage space.

Buying the best external hard drive for your needs involves figuring out how much space you need. You don't want to buy an external hard drive that's too small, and end up running out of space, but neither do you really want to pay over the odds for storage space you'll never need.

So, we've listed the best external hard drives money can buy in 2019. Each external drive (or backup hard drive) on this page has been carefully picked to make sure it offers fast data transfer speeds – essential if you move lots of big files regularly – while also offering sturdy build quality so you don't have to worry about them breaking and losing your files.

When buying the best external hard drive for your needs, there are certain things you need to take into account. For example, you'll want to make sure you have a drive that offers fast data transfer speeds.

In this guide we list the best external hard drives with both traditional hard drives and faster (and more expensive) solid state drives.

Still, the best external hard drives are also dependable and rugged, so you can safely store your data without worry. The best external drives will also be light enough to carry in your bag, with large capacities so that you can keep your data safe when travelling.

There's a huge range of external hard drives on offer, so we've put together this list of the best external hard drives to help you find the perfect one for your needs.

1. Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC external hard drive

Wireless security

Capacity: 2TB | Interface: USB 3.0

Today's best Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC 2TB deals
NFC security
Not the fastest drive

An external hard drive you can buy without breaking the bank, Buffalo's MiniStation Extreme NFC could be your match made in heaven.

With compatibility for both Mac and Windows machines, the Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC is very flexible, and comes with a rugged case that's dust and water resistant, along with a built-in USB 3.0 cable.

Not only is your data kept protected from knocks and drops with the rugged shell, but it's also got 256-bit AES security features and NFC (Near Field Communication) features as well.

Essentially it allows you to unlock the drive to get to your files quickly and easily by tapping the supplied NFC card onto the drive's body. Pretty neat!

2. Western Digital My Passport Ultra 4TB external hard drive

Comes with Encryption and a long warranty

Capacity: 4TB | Interface: USB 3.0

Large capacity
Suite of applications

The latest generation of the Western Digital My Passport Ultra range of external hard drives has landed, coming in sizes from 1TB to 4TB. It features cloud storage and 256-AES encryption, along with WD's own software suite.

It is a good performer when it comes to data transfer speeds but doesn't come near the top of the leaderboard. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't reach the top speeds of solid state external drives, but for external hard drives based on traditional HDDs, this is the drive to consider.

3. Samsung T5 SSD external hard drive

The best external SSD of 2018

Capacity: 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB | Interface: USB Type-C

Incredibly fast
Expensive

Best Mac Compatible External Hard Drive

If you'd rather have an external hard drive that took advantage of solid state drive (SSD) speeds, then the Samsung Portable SSD T5 is definitely the best external hard drive for you. Samsung has a brilliant reputation for external SSDs, thanks to products like the T3, and the T5 builds on its predecessor by adding a fast USB Type-C connection that ekes out every last drop of performance from the solid state drive inside. Of course, it's also backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 if your PC doesn't have USB Type-C. It's expensive, but it's well worth the cash.

4. Adata SD700 External SSD

Capacity: 256GB, 512GB or 1TB | Interface: USB 3.0

Great performance
No USB Type-C

The Adata SD700 will suit those looking for a rugged storage device that can provide ample capacity without costing too much. It performs superbly well and remains the only SSD we’ve seen that is IP68 rated.

Thanks to the solid state drive that resides in this external hard drive, it's a lot faster than external drives that use traditional spinning hard drives - so you're getting great transfer speeds as well as rugged protection.

It also comes in capacities up to 1TB, so you don't have to worry about missing out on storage space just because it uses an SSD - this drive really does hit all the right notes.

5. WD My Book Duo 4TB external hard drive

Capacity: 4TB | Interface: USB 3.0 x 2

Huge amounts of space
Expensive

If you're looking for the absolute largest capacity external hard drive, then the WD My Book Duo 4TB is the one to get, offering a huge 4TB (you can also get versions with up to 20TB) of storage space over two hard drives.

If you don't mind sacrificing some of the ample storage space you can set the drives up in a RAID array, so you have file backups of your files should one of the drives die.

This USB 3.0 drive has many of the features of a fully-fledged NAS device (including a high price), and if you have a router with a USB 3.0 port you could use this as a network attached storage device in its own right.

The device, which comes with two-year warranty, has 256-bit AES hardware encryption, and automatic backup software (WD SmartWare Pro).

Worth noting that the enclosure used is fully serviceable and that WD ships the drive already pre-formatted for Windows users (NTFS).

6. Buffalo MiniStation Thunderbolt external hard drive

Best Thunderbolt external hard drive

Capacity: 1TB, 2TB | Interface: Thunderbolt, USB 3.0

Low price compared to other Thunderbolt drives
Not SSD

If you have a device with a Thunderbolt port, then this is a great option, as it provides twice the speeds of standard USB 3.0 drives. It's also not especially expensive compared to other Thunderbolt drives. The price is kept down due to its use of a traditional hard drive, rather than an SSD, which limits the potential speeds. It also comes with a USB 3.0 port for people without access to Thunderbolt.

7. Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive 5TB

Capacity: 5TB | Interface: USB 3.0

Today's best Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive 5TB deals
Very fast data transfer speeds
You pay more for the Mac-formatted version

If you want to combine speed and capacity, then the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive 5TB is definitely worth considering. It comes in a range of sizes up to 8TB and it beats the competition when it comes to read and write speeds as well.

On top of this storage and speed, you get a decent amount of peace of mind thanks to Seagate's lower than average failure rates, especially in bigger capacity hard drives.

You also get backup software, and the drive is compatible with both Windows and Macs, though it's formatted for Windows out of the box unless you go for a Mac-specific hard drive - though these are more expensive.

8. Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro external hard drive

Capacity: 2TB | Interface: USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi

Today's best Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro deals
Wireless AC
Good battery life
Expensive due to Wi-Fi features

Even if we had mixed feelings on past versions of the My Passport Wireless, the 2016 “pro” variant of the external HDD restores faith in the Western Digital name. The design, for one, has been overhauled and no longer resembles the My Passport Ultra or My Passport for Mac. Instead, there’s now a more premium feel to the My Passport Wireless Pro. It resembles an external DVD drive, but considering the onboard SD card slot, don’t worry about getting it confused with anything else. For photographers, this will make the Wireless Pro stand out.

For everyone else, there’s a massive 6,400mAh battery built into the device. This lets the drive be used completely free of wires over 2.4GHz or 5GHz channels. When it’s wired up, however, don’t expect cutting edge connection tech, as the My Passport Wireless Pro uses only USB Type-B to Type-A. Completely absent is the latest and greatest USB-C connection.

Where the My Passport Wireless Pro compromises on affordability, it’s able to benefit in just about every other area. Of course, not everyone needs a wireless hard drive or SD card support, but for those who do, it’s almost essential.

9. LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive 4TB

Capacity: 4TB | Interface: USB-C

Today's best LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive 4TB deals
Fast USB-C connection
Expensive

You may have stumbled upon the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive when perusing the Apple website for USB-C accessories. There’s a reason for that: the Porsche Design ships with both USB Type-C to Type-A and USB Type-C to Type-C connectors, making it a worthy candidate regardless of your setup.

It’s expensive for an external hard drive, don’t get us wrong, especially if you’re in the market for the top-end 4TB option. On the other hand, this is an HDD that could theoretically output speeds of up to 5Gbps, if it weren’t hindered by the limits of SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) technology.

Comprising five 800GB platters in a 15mm form factor, the LaCie Porsche Design Mobile is an excellent challenger to the Seagate M3, though it’s notably bigger in both weight and dimensions.

Sure, it packs an extra convenience factor in the form of USB-C, but it should be noted that the Porsche Design Mobile is still limited to USB 3.0 speeds. Plus, even an aluminum finish can’t prevent it from clashing with your Rose Gold MacBook. Nevertheless, LaCie’s offering is the best USB-C external HDD money can buy, at least for the time being.

10. iStorage diskAshur 2TB external hard drive

Best for security

Capacity: 2TB | Interface: USB 3.0

Physical security
Expensive

Typically, iStorage hard disks cater best to governments and multinational organizations around the world, for good reason too – they offer tight security like no other drives around.

If someone tries to tamper with your iStorage drive, you can configure it to self-desturct. What's more, the data is encrypted by the 256-bit AES protocol, with multiple forms of protection in place to ensure the bad guys don't get in no matter how persistent. When you consider all that extra security, the prices won't scare you away either.

Sure, it's still expensive, four times the price of an equivalent 2TB drive, and unlikely to be the most nimble performer. But, you're paying for a product that's virtually uncrackable. Bear in mind, though, you'll get no help from the manufacturer if things go awry and you lose your password.

Mac External Hard Drive Buying Guide

When it comes to finding the right external hard drive for your Mac, you have a lot of options out there. When looking for the right solution, you need to consider how much data you have to store, and whether you have multiple computers that are connected to your home network. You also need to take into account backup speed, the sensitivity of our data, how good you are with computers, and the physical size of the drive. This is going to effect the portability.

How Much Storage Do You Need?

It’s possible to spend up to $200 on a 2 terabyte drive, or even $300 for a 4TB model, but having all that space may not be necessary for you. You basically want to get the largest drive that you can afford, because this will allow you to store all your data for years to come. Keep in mind that your storage is going to accumulate, but it’s about knowing how much data you really have on a consistent basis.

You for sure want to get a drive that has at least the same amount of storage as your computer’s hard drive. The physical size of the drive is another consideration, especially if you want it to be portable. Should you need to take your backup with you, then you want to make sure that it’s small enough to carry.

How Fast Should it Be?

The speed of the external hard drive is another consideration that you need to take into account. Some people think that online storage options are a good idea but the problem is that they’re really too slow. Sometimes after your first backup it can take almost days to complete the next one, and that’s why an external hard drive offers you a faster solution. This makes it quick and easy to store music, videos, and images in a flash. Keep in mind that installation of the drive is going to require a little bit of technical know-how. Once you learn the ropes, you’re going to see that an external hard drive is a great alternative to all other forms of storage.

How Many Computers Do You Have?

External

This is something you definitely need to consider when buying an external hard drive. If you have many computers running on the same network then consider purchasing a network drive that can cover all these devices at once, and helps you to share data that you save. It’s going to take a little more time to figure out the installation, but in the long run it’s the easiest solution. Also, if your computer is placed near a router then connecting it with an Ethernet cable is a smart choice that is going to give you faster speeds. When you have a wired connection it makes it up to 50 times faster than your usual wireless connection.

Are You Good With Computers?

This is going to help determine which drive you purchase. It’s fairly easy to set up a backup, but when you’re not tech savvy it’s important to choose the simplest option. When it comes to going with the handiest choice, and these are thumb drives and optical discs, it’s going to require you to use multiple discs and devices to get the backup done. A good alternative if you know you’re not adept at technology is an external hard drive that runs without software or a drive that does backup at the push of a button.

Supplementing your Software

You can find inexpensive drives that do not require software but they’re a bit short when it comes to features and flexibility. You can even get software that is bundled with other drives, and these have their limitations as well. Often these are not able to back up onto CDs and DVDs. Third-party backup software is going to be quite inexpensive, and sometimes this option is well worth it. Some operating systems come with their own backup software such as Max OS X 10.5, and these will automatically back up everything that you have and they let you restore anything from a single file onto the entire drive.

It’s possible to restore the most recent version of a file that you have modified, and Time Machine in particular makes it easy to do this. The interface of this is quite simple to use, but it does take a little effort to learn the basics of the backup process. Windows 8 also comes with a backup program that has a feature called ‘File History’ that will backup copies of files similar to the way that Mac OS X does it.

Add More Protection

Should your backup and computer live in the same area then your data can be prone to fire, burglary, flood and other problems. If you want your content to be as safe as possible then consider a supplementary backup that is in a different location. This means that your content will always be safe should something happen to your computer.

Types of Backup

There are a number of different backup options, including internal, external, online services, network drives, and thumb devices. You get the fastest backup with an internal drive, but installation of this can be quite complicated. This kind of backup is also susceptible to malware that may infect the primary drive. Optical discs are quite easy to use, but you’re going to need a lot of them, and the discs themselves are prone to wear and tear.

External Hard Drive For Mac 2018

Thumb drives are another good option and they offer higher capacities than optical drives. Keep in mind that it is easy to lose these and they don’t have the same capacity as hard drives. With all the types of backup that you should consider, an external hard drive seems to be the most appealing.

Conclusion

External Hard Drive For Mac Reviews 2018

If you’re someone that owns a lot of data then having an external hard drive is a must to ensure that all that data is safe and secure. Most computers just don’t have the storage capacity that people need, and that is why an outside source helps to take the load off your computer while also keeping this data safe in a remote location. There are a lot of external drives out there to choose from, and when you’re looking for a model that is specifically designed for the Mac then you’re going to see that the options almost seem endless. We highlighted the top rated external drives on the market, and these are praised by customers because they deliver solid performance, durability, and are made from the highest quality materials. You can be confident when you purchase one of these models that you’re getting a product that will safely store all your material and will be able to handle ample volume.

The buyer’s guide took it a step further by highlighting the various features that are available to you. When it comes to finding the right drive for you, it’s really about knowing yourself and what you’re looking for. If you’re someone who is not very tech savvy, then it’s smart to go with a simpler option that isn’t going to require as much installation and upkeep. If you’re very good with technology, then you can select one of the more complicated options that is probably going to work faster and more efficiently. No matter what device you choose, you’re going to love the benefit that you get from owning an external hard drive, and the peace of mind that it gives you.

The vba code is fine as is. it is opening and appending multiple files from the same folder to a common sheet. The number of files inputted can vary. The vba appication execution will not be watched as it can be started automatically at any time. I have tested the application, after I select wait, the application continues to process and ends successfully. FYI the appication runs on windows 7 and macOS sierra

only the MacOS issues the message. Other sub in the application run far longer so run time is not the issue. I suspect it is occurring because of the I/O time that excel is unaware of.

The 15 Best Mmorpgs For Mac Gamer Hq Mac Mmorpgs Mmohuts. Mac Gamer HQ picks its favorite Mac games from 2018, including AAA games, indies and more. By Kirk Hiner| Updated Oct 30, 2018 2018 will soon be over and the quantity of great new MacOS games released so far is impressive.

Yes, we know that everyone loves MMORPGs. These games are developed to keep the players immersed for a long time with their quests, raids, and loots. If you have been looking for a great MMORPG that actually suits your tastes then worry no more because we bring you the best MMORPGs. Check out the 15 Best MMORPGs out there and choose any one or multiple of these amazing games.

Best MMORPG Games To Play

Dilawar’s Favorite: My personal favorite are World of Warcraft, DC Universe Online, and Neverwinter.

1. World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is the supposed father of all MMORPGs and the genre itself, developed by Blizzard, it has garnered the most positive reviews for its amazing gameplay and an intriguing environment. The game allows you to choose your character, pick a class, and customize your character completely in different ways that you prefer. In order to gain experience and level up your character, you must complete quests.

You can either take the quests solo (which is quite hard) or you can join a party and do a multiplayer quest run along with your friends. You can also duke it out against other players in the PvP mode. World of Warcraft works on a subscription based payment model so in order to play you have to buy subscription cards or make the payment directly with your credit card to keep playing the game after the free trial period is over. Playing for up to level 20 is entirely free, but after that period you have to extend your subscription.

Download (Free/Paid)

2. Path of Exile

Path of Exile is everything you expected from a true sequel to the famous Diablo II. Diablo III definitely had a shaky start and didn’t do justice to Diablo II’s legacy. However, Path of Exile definitely gives off that Diablo II look and play similarly as well. In this game, you start your journey in an unknown world and try to explore large areas including dangerous dungeons and monster-filled caves. You fight off hordes of monsters and other dark forces that are present in these areas and accumulate experience for killing monsters and completing quests.

Mac

You can team up with others and play together, but the main objective of the game is to give every single player their own isolated vast map to explore, you can either do that with your party or just go about it solo. The game is entirely free to play and you don’t have to use any money to gain an upper hand.

3. Age of Conan

If you are on the lookout for an amazing free MMORPG game that offers great gameplay then Age of Conan is the perfect choice for you. This game is inspired although quite loosely by the novels of the same title. However, Age of Conan is a great game that rivals World Of Warcraft in the storyline and offers quite similar gameplay elements.

You choose your preferred class that boasts its own unique features and abilities, explore the huge open-world, finish quests, discover and gather resources, and upgrade your own character’s equipment and skill tree. You have the freedom to select your own path in this exciting game. Lead a magical life of a powerful sorcerer or be a rock-hard warrior, it all depends on what you want to be. Explore the intriguing legend of Conan in this massively multiplayer online game.

4. DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is a great MMORPG where your favorite DC heroes and villains like Batman, Superman, Joker, etc. make an appearance. These heroes and villains are in the game but they are not the main character. Since the DC Universe Online is an online RPG which means you are the real hero in the game. The core concept of the game is similar to other MMORPG games out there, but it includes your favorite DC characters.

There are numerous character templates in the game to help you create and customize your very own superhero, if you don’t have the time to completely make one from scratch, the best thing is that it can also be a villain. The game has a fluid combat system where your heroes can engage in combat to gain experience and level up. Leveling up your hero gives you access to new abilities, powers, and skills which make the game more exciting and fun. After completing the initial story mode, you can also jump into story-based raids, co-op quests, and Player vs Player battles.

5. Neverwinter

Neverwinter is a fairly new entrant to the MMORPG genre. This amazing game is available for download on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC platforms. The game is loosely inspired by and based on Dungeons & Dragons’ rulebook. You can pick a custom character from any one of the multiple different classes, pick your preferred race, and assign your newly character action points to boost its skills and stats. The number of quests you complete is directly related to the growth of your character. You can create parties with other players in the game and take on quests together to make the overall objective much easier for each one of you.

6. Warframe

If you’ve already had enough of the medieval-themed MMORPGs out there and want something with a more futuristic setting then we’ve got you covered. Rift is most definitely an interesting MMORPG out there right now. It offers a plethora of features that make it one of the biggest MMOs out there. It’s become on of the best and probably the biggest MMO because it takes all the positive aspects of other popular MMO games and mixes them into one perfectly balanced and exciting game that pulls in anyone who give it a try. There are two factions in the game that are at a constant war against one another and you must help your faction (that you choose) in winning the war.

Gaming on the Mac has always been a bit difficult, and many players turn to Boot Camp as their all-in-one solution for finding great games that work with OS X. This solution has its downsides, however, not the least of which is the annoyance of constantly switching between OS X and Windows.

Fortunately, some genres of games now offer a wide enough selection to keep the average Mac gamer happy. Perhaps the best example is the MMO, a hugely popular category that used to ignore the Mac, but, over the last five years, has seen more and more games offer up Mac clients.

Here are the 10 best MMOs for the Mac right now.

Dofus

Dofus may seem like a strange name for those of us who speak English, but this French MMO is far from a joke. Unlike many MMOs, which focus on real-time combat mechanics, Dofus offers up a turn-based system that’s more reminiscent of Japanese RPGs, though also given a twist of its own. Though the visuals are low-fi, the cartoony look has aged well and offers equal appeal to both kids and adults.

Though the game can be played for free, most of Dofus’ content requires a subscription. A one-month subscription is only $6.90, but certain actions (like changing a character’s look) are an additional charge.

Everquest

The game that opened the MMO genre to a broad audience is now well over a decade old, but that doesn’t mean people have stopped playing it. EQMac, the appropriately named Mac version of the game, is still available. The lone server compatible with Mac has never been updated past the Planes Of Power expansion – but some may prefer this, as it allows the game to retain all of its old-school glory.

EQMac was to be shut down when Everquest went free-to-play last year, but after massive fan response, Sony decided to keep the game alive while also removing subscription fees. That’s right; this version of the game is free and has no restrictions.

Eve Online

Another veteran MMO, Eve Online is well known for its massive PvP battles and open world that provides players with the freedom to trade, build, pirate, or wage war. Unlike Everquest, however, Eve Online has a long history of supporting Mac and doesn’t force players onto a separate server.

The game is free-to-try for 14 days, after which it’s $19.99 to buy with one month of game time included. The subscription is $14.95 a month (for a month-to-month subscription) thereafter. However, players have the option to pay for game time with an in-game currency called Plex. Collecting enough to buy free game time isn’t easy, but certainly possible.

Guild Wars 2

WoW has become the gold standard in the world of MMORPGs, and those MMORPGs that are supposed...Read More is a dynamic action-RPG with tons of PvE and PvP content. Unlike many other games in this genre, which have relatively static worlds, Guild Wars 2 offers dynamic quests and events that spontaneously appear to challenge players. Players also have the opportunity to fight over keeps and castles, and can do so before reaching level cap.

Mac players should be aware that the client is considered a beta, so it may not be as stable or smooth as the PC versions. Access to the Mac beta client is available to everyone who owns the game, which currently sells for about $40. There’s no subscription, but a real-money store offers the purchase of aesthetic customizations, character re-specs and other benefits.

Lord Of The Rings Online

Turbine’s long-running rendition of Middle Earth surprised everyone in 2012 by releasing a Mac client after ignoring the platform for five years. Though certainly no spring chicken, Lord Of The Rings Online Getting Started With The Lord Of The Rings OnlineGetting Started With The Lord Of The Rings OnlineTurbine’s take on Middle Earth has been live for almost 6 years now and, despite the appearance of numerous other titles, remains one of the most popular western MMOs. It’s also one of the easiest...Read Moreremains one of the largest MMOs, and arguably offers the best story in the genre. Tolkien’s books provide plenty of background and Turbine has no problem fleshing it out with both familiar characters and new ones introduced to detail struggles only hinted at by the trilogy.

Mac players can enjoy any of the servers available for the game and have access to all the same content. Though free to play, a great deal of LOTRO’s content is locked to people who don’t purchase it either individually or as part of a subscription. “VIP” plans are normally $14.99 a month, though that’s lowered to $9.99 a month for players who grab at least three months at a time.

Eve Online

Minions Of Mirth

Released in 2005, Minions of Mirth is an unusual indie game that can be played either as a single-player game or as an MMO. Player characters can level three classes at once, rather than one, and the game offers an extensive crafting system. Though not as old as Everquest, MoM certainly replicates the old-school vibe both in interface and look; it’s not a beautiful game, or an intuitive one, but figuring out its secrets is part of the charm.

The game is free-to-play, but a great deal of content is locked for those who don’t pay. The full edition of the game is $29.95, which unlocks most of the game’s content, with the exception of a few extra DLC packs. There’s no monthly subscription.

Runescape

Though perhaps not as well-known as Everquest, browser-based MMO Runescape has been around just as long and has actually received better support over the years. The developers recently released Runescape 3, a massive update that overhauls everything from combat to graphics. You may be amazed to see just what a browser game can deliver in 2013.

The game is free to play, but a subscription can be purchased for $7.95 a month. Going with the subscription expands the game world, provides access to more quests, and gets rid of in-game advertisements.

Savage 2 [No Longer Available]

The Savage series is an interesting take on MMO mechanics which abandons a persistent world in favor of fast-paced combat that’s one part Everquest, one part Team Fortress, and one part Starcraft. Players can either fight other players in fast-paced combat, or hang back and focus on improving their side’s base and enhancing the abilities of others.

Savage 2 is free to download and play. Players can pay $9.99 per month for a Prime account, which provides access to a few extra features, expanded inventory slots, lifetime statistics tracking and replays of game matches.

Warhammer Online

Hyped as the next big thing in MMOs at the time of its launch, Warhammer Online: Age Of Reckoning turned out to be a massive flop. That’s not because the game is bad, however; there’s a ton of content here, including dynamic quests that can be seen as a prelude to those found in newer MMOs like Guild Wars 2. Though now running off just a few servers, the game is still live and still receives an occasional update.

Warhammer Online allows PC and Mac players to enjoy the same servers and is free-to-play via its “Endless Trial.” Trial accounts are limited to the first tier of PvP content, can’t use the bank or auction house, and can only play on select servers. The $14.99 monthly subscription lifts these restrictions.

Planeshift

World Of Warcraft

Last, but certainly not least, we have World Of Warcraft, the sensation that remains the most popular MMO of all time. Unlike many competitors, WoW has offered a Mac client for years and has always allowed Mac users to play on the same servers. The game is approaching its tenth year and, after many expansions, offers a wealth of content. You could play this game for hundreds of hours and see only a fraction of what’s included.

The only real downside is the price, as the Battle Chest (which contains the first two expansions) is $19.99. The latter two expansions, Cataclysm and Mists Of Pandaria4 Reasons Why Mists Of Pandaria Makes WOW Worth Going Back To [MUO Gaming]4 Reasons Why Mists Of Pandaria Makes WOW Worth Going Back To [MUO Gaming]The latest World of Warcraft expansion has been on the market for a couple weeks, and I have been able to spend far too many hours playing it. Conclusion

Best Mmos For Mac

This doesn’t include every MMO that can be enjoyed on the Mac, but it certainly contains the majority of those worth your time. You may notice some games missing like The Old Republic and Star Trek Online; that’s because these titles don’t have a native Mac client. If you know of an awesome MMO that this list missed, let us know about it in the comments.

Mmos For Mac 2018

  1. RIP, EQ Mac.

    You will be missed.

  2. This was great! thank you!

    • welcome ders!

  3. Surprise you didn't mention Diablo. All three games has Mac native games.

    • Diablo isn't an mmo.

    • @Benny: /sigh yes it is.

    • Hey bro
MMO means Massive Multiplayer Online and Diablo is not really Massive. So it's 'just' a good MORPG.

    • So then is Call of Duty an MMO? 8 v 8 matches don't count, just like a maximum group size of 4 for Diablo 3 (or whatever the max size is) doesn't make it 'massively multiplayer' even though you can connect with anyone.

Got two questions here: first off, which do you think is the best wirelss router for Mac? Okay, I understand the Airport Extreme Base is good, blah, blah, I'm not looking to pay $129 right now for a router. So, what routers do you have and what experiences do you guys have with your routers?
Second, my Windows machine just has fast ethernet and I have 5 Mbps High Speed Internet, with Roadrunner down south in Texas, so would it make a difference if I switched to Gigabit ethernet on my Windows machine? Would I receive faster transfer speeds just by switching?

The Best Mac Antivirus Protection of 2018 Despite what you may have heard, your Apple computer is not immune to malware. We test the top contenders to identify those offering the best Mac. Best Wireless Routers 2018 – Ultimate Buying Guide A wireless, or Wi-Fi, router is a device which allows you to connect multiple devices to the internet all at the same time. Wi-Fi routers also give you a way to move data, or even stream media between devices across your home or small office.

This article is for network administrators and others who manage their own network. If you're trying to join a Wi-Fi network, one of these articles should help:

  • Mac: Connect to the Internet and check for Wi-Fi issues
  • iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Join a Wi-Fi network and resolve Wi-Fi issues

Follow these steps first

Before you change your settings, follow these steps:

  • Make sure that your Wi–Fi router's firmware is up to date. For AirPort Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express Base Station, check for the latest firmware using AirPort Utility.
  • Make sure that your Wi-Fi devices support the settings this article recommends.
  • If possible, back up your Wi–Fi router's settings.
  • Forget or remove the Wi-Fi settings for your network from any devices that connect to your Wi-Fi router. This will prevent the devices from attempting to connect to your network with the old configuration. You'll need to reconnect these devices to your network when you're done applying the new settings.
  • Configure all Wi–Fi routers on the same network with the same settings. Otherwise, devices could have difficulty connecting to your network, or your network could become unreliable.
  • If you're using a dual-band Wi–Fi router, configure both bands to have the same settings, unless otherwise noted below.
Best router for mac

SSID or Wi-Fi network name

The SSID (service set identifier), or network name, identifies your Wi-Fi network to users and other Wi-Fi devices. It is case sensitive.

Set to: Any unique name

Choose a name that's unique to your network and isn't shared by other nearby networks or networks you're likely to encounter. If your router came with a default SSID, it's especially important that you change it to a different, unique name. Some common default SSID names to avoid are linksys, netgear, dlink, wireless, 2wire, and default.

Best Wireless Router For Mac And Pc

If your SSID isn't unique, Wi-Fi devices will have trouble identifying your network. This could cause them to fail to automatically connect to your network, or to connect to other networks that share the same SSID. It might also prevent Wi-Fi devices from using all routers in your network, or prevent them from using all available bands of a router.

Hidden network

Hidden networks don't broadcast their SSID over Wi-Fi. This option might be incorrectly referred to as a closed network, and the corresponding nonhidden state might be referred to as broadcast.

Set to: Disabled

Because hidden networks don't broadcast their SSID, devices might need more time to find them and connect to them. Hiding a network doesn't secure your Wi-Fi network, because the SSID can still be discovered in other ways. You should always enable security on your Wi-Fi router.

MAC address authentication or filtering

Restricts access to a Wi-Fi router to devices with specific MAC (Media Access Control) addresses.

Set to: Disabled

When enabled, this feature allows a user to configure a list of MAC addresses for the Wi-Fi router, and restrict access to devices with addresses that are on the list. Devices with MAC addresses not on the list will fail to associate with the Wi-Fi network. MAC addresses can be changed easily, so don't rely on them to prevent unauthorized access to the network.

iOS 8 and later uses a randomized MAC address when running Wi-Fi scans. The scans are conducted when a device isn't associated with a Wi-Fi network and its processor is asleep. A device’s processor goes to sleep shortly after the screen is turned off. Wi-Fi scans are run to determine if a user can connect to a preferred Wi-Fi network. Enhanced Wi-Fi scans are run when a device uses Location Services for apps that use geofencing, such as location-based reminders, that determine if the device is near a specific location.

Security

The security setting controls the type of authentication and encryption used by your Wi-Fi router, which allows you to control access to the network and specify the level of privacy for data you send over the air.

Set to: WPA2 Personal (AES)

WPA2 Personal (AES) is currently the strongest form of security offered by Wi-Fi products, and is recommended for all uses. When enabling WPA2, be sure to select a strong password that can't be guessed by third parties.

If you have older Wi-Fi devices that don't support WPA2 Personal (AES), a good second choice is WPA/WPA2 Mode, also known as WPA Mixed Mode. This mode allows newer devices to use the stronger WPA2 AES encryption, while still allowing older devices to connect with older WPA TKIP-level encryption. If your Wi-Fi router doesn't support WPA/WPA2 Mode, WPA Personal (TKIP) mode is the next best choice.

For compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons, WEP is not recommended. WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. If you must choose between WEP and TKIP, choose TKIP.

Due to serious security weaknesses, the WEP and WPA TKIP encryption methods are deprecated and strongly discouraged. Use these modes only if necessary to support legacy Wi-Fi devices that don't support WPA2 AES and can't be upgraded to support WPA2 AES. Devices using these deprecated encryption methods can't take full advantage of the performance and other features of 802.11n and 802.11ac. As a result, the Wi-Fi Alliance has directed the Wi-Fi industry to phase out WEP and WPA TKIP.

If your security is set to None or unsecured mode, you're using no authentication or encryption. Anyone can join your Wi-Fi network, use your Internet connection, access any shared resource on your network, and read any traffic you send over the network. Using an unsecured network is not recommended.

2.4GHz radio mode

This setting controls which versions of the 802.11n/ac standard the network uses for wireless communication on the 2.4GHz band.

Set to: Auto or 802.11n/ac

Routers that support 802.11 should be configured for 802.11n/ac for maximum speed and compatibility. Different Wi-Fi routers support different radio modes, so the setting varies depending on the router. In general, enable support for all modes. Devices can then automatically select the fastest commonly supported mode to communicate. Choosing a subset of the available modes prevents some devices from connecting. For example, 802.11ac devices can't connect to a Wi-Fi router in 802.11n-only mode. Also, choosing a subset of the available modes might cause interference with nearby legacy networks, and nearby legacy devices might interfere with your network.

5GHz radio mode

This setting controls which versions of the 802.11a/b/g/n standard the network uses for wireless communication on the 5GHz band. Newer standards support faster transfer rates, and older standards provide compatibility with older devices and additional range.

Set to: Auto or 802.11n/ac

Routers that support 802.11n should be configured for 802.11n/ac mode for maximum speed and compatibility. Different Wi-Fi routers support different radio modes, so the setting varies depending on the router. In general, enable support for all modes. Devices can then automatically select the fastest commonly supported mode to communicate. Choosing a subset of the available modes prevents older devices from connecting. For example, 802.11ac devices can't connect to a Wi-Fi router in 802.11n-only mode. Also, choosing a subset of the available modes might cause interference with nearby legacy networks, and nearby legacy devices might interfere with your network.

Channel

This setting controls which channel your Wi-Fi router uses to communicate.

Set to: Auto

For best performance, choose 'Auto' mode and let the Wi-Fi router select the best channel. If this mode isn't supported by your Wi-Fi router, choose a channel that's free from other Wi-Fi routers and other sources of interference. Read about possible sources of interference.

2.4GHz channel width

Channel width controls how large of a 'pipe' 'is available to transfer data. However, larger channels are more subject to interference and more likely to interfere with other devices. A 40MHz channel is sometimes called a wide channel, and a 20MHz channel is a narrow channel.

Set to: 20MHz

Linksys Wireless Router For Mac

Use 20MHz channels in the 2.4GHz band. Using 40MHz channels in the 2.4GHz band can cause performance and reliability issues with your network, especially in the presence of other Wi-Fi networks and other 2.4GHz devices. A 40MHz channel might also cause interference and issues with other devices that use this band, such as Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, and neighboring Wi-Fi networks. Routers that don't support 40MHz channels in the 2.4GHz band do support 20MHz channels.

5GHz channel width

Channel width controls how large of a 'pipe' is available to transfer data. Larger channels are more susceptible to interference, and more likely to interfere with other devices. Interference is less of an issue in the 5GHz band than in the 2.4GHz band. A 40MHz channel is sometimes called a wide channel, and a 20MHz channel is a narrow channel.

Set to:
For 802.11n access points, set the 5GHz band to 20MHz and 40MHz.
For 802.11ac access points, set the 5GHz band to 20MHz, 40MHz, and 80MHz.

For best performance and reliability, enable support for all channel widths. This allows devices to use the largest width they support, which results in optimal performance and compatibility. Not all client devices support 40MHz channels, so don't enable 40MHz-only mode. Devices that support only 20MHz channels can't connect to a Wi-Fi router in 40MHz-only mode. Similarly, don't enable 80MHz-only mode, or only clients capable of 802.11ac will be able to connect. Routers that don't support 40MHz or 80MHz channels do support 20MHz channels.

DHCP

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) assigns addresses that identify devices on your network. Once assigned, devices use these addresses to communicate with each other and with computers on the Internet. The functionality of a DHCP server can be thought of as similar to a phone company handing out phone numbers, which customers then use to call other people.

Set to: Enabled, if it's the only DHCP server on your network

There should be only one DHCP server on your network. This DHCP server might be built in to your cable modem, DSL modem, or router. If more than one device has DHCP enabled, you will likely see address conflicts and have issues accessing the Internet or other resources on your network.

NAT

Network address translation (NAT) translates between addresses on the Internet and those on a local network. The functionality of a NAT provider is like that of a worker in an office mail room who takes a business address and an employee name on incoming letters and replaces them with the destination office number in a building. This allows people outside the business to send information to a specific person in the building.

Set to: Enabled, if it's the only router providing NAT services on your network

Generally, enable NAT only on the device that acts as a router for your network. This is usually your cable modem, your DSL modem, or your standalone router, which might also act as your Wi-Fi router. Using NAT on more than one device is called double NAT, and that can cause issues with accessing Internet services, such as games, Voice Over IP (VoIP), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and communicating across the different levels of NAT on the local network.

WMM

WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) prioritizes network traffic according to four access categories: voice, video, best effort, and background.

Set to: Enabled

All 802.11n and 802.11ac access points should have WMM enabled in their default configuration. Disabling WMM can cause issues for the entire network, not just Apple products on the network.

Location Services

Some countries or regions have regulations that affect wireless signal strength and the use of Wi-Fi channels. When you travel to other countries or regions, make sure that your devices have Location Services turned on so that you can connect to Wi-Fi networks in that country or region.

On your Mac:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click in the corner of the window, then enter your password.
  3. In the Privacy tab, select Location Services, then select Enable Location Services.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the list of apps and services, then click the Details button next to System Services.
  5. In the Details dialog, select Wi-Fi Networking.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy, then turn on Location Services.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the list, tap System Services, then turn on Wi-Fi Networking.

Wireless carrier Wi-Fi networks

Wireless Router For Mac And Pc

Wireless carrier Wi-Fi networks are networks configured by your carrier and their partners. Your iPhone treats them as known networks and automatically connects to them. If you see 'Privacy Warning' under the name of your carrier's network in Wi-Fi Settings, your cellular identity might be exposed if a malicious hotspot impersonates your carrier's Wi-Fi network.
